Case Study: ‘Mark’
Short case with no quote for Citizens Advice
When Mark* left his job to care for his terminally ill wife, a whole new set of problems began. With diabetes, arthritis and mental health problems of his own, Mark struggled to cope with the emotional and financial pressures of caring.
Mark’s application for Personal Independence Payments was refused. He didn’t have the strength to deal with an appeals process so he gave up on the idea and the couple sank further into debt.
Eventually Mark was put in touch with Citizens Advice where our adviser, Julie, was able to offer support. With Mark’s permission, Julie produced a Mandatory Reconsideration for Mark’s PIP application and managed it on his behalf.
Julie also arranged a small Macmillan grant, even fuel vouchers to help cover some of the extra costs of treatment, but she knew Mark needed more long-term help.
When Mark’s Mandatory Reconsideration was also refused, Julie collected evidence and liaised with HM Courts & Tribunals Service for an appeal. Both of these are long and complex processes with which Mark would not have been able to negotiate.
While Mark awaits the outcome of the final appeal, Julie’s hard work behind the scenes has allowed Mark to spend more time caring for his wife. Carers with their own health issues need exceptional support. Citizens Advice in West Sussex is doing all it can to provide it.
